Display of values as continuous gradient...

Anyone have a good algorithm (or aware of reasonable conceptual
heuristic) for displaying continuous data as a "gradient?"

I have a set of data points along a continuum which cluster modally.
Displaying the modes as hot spots on a continuum has been proposed as a
display that would resonate with our users (like blue to red for rare to
frequent).

Pointers to Tufte-esque senstive discussions of the algorithms that
would support such a display would be appreciated.

Thanks!

bizarre map

Not to be too picky, but what earthly good is that map? I can see it as
some sort of informational art project, but you really wouldn't expect
an ordinary human to use that thing in any effective way, would you?
Outside of intellectual gymnastics, it seems completely useless to me.

Growing Pains

Dear IxDA members:
As our membership grows, we will see many divergent opinions appear
on our discussion lists. IxDA is fundamentally in favor of free
expression, and
we believe in fostering a tolerant and temperate community that relies
on trust
and mutual respect rather than authoritarian measures to preserve the
peace.
However, IxDA cannot and will not tolerate harassment of individuals or
groups on our lists based on race, gender, creed, culture, or
nationality. We
will, when necessary, take measures to ensure our members are protected
from
such harassment.

Revamp from V1 to V2

Hi All,

I've an opportunity to revamp an enterprise application already being
used by several customers, with significant room for improvement in
user experience. What should be general approach for the same?
Is there a systematic way? Where do I start?

I would like to know how others have handled the same.

Re-thinking the obvious ... a new London Underground map

http://www.oskarlin.com/2005/11/29/time-travel/

I love this! Ok, its a map ... not very interactive, but it is very
contextual and re-thinking user motivation in terms of "how do I get
from point A to point B?"

Taking the London Underground map and re-drawing it so that time as
opposed to distance is the determiner of line length!!!!

TIME!!! What is more IxD than playing the element of TIME.

Too cool!

And speaking of trees, I want to kill one

I'm having a classic "tree" issue. I need to design a tiny-little
front end for a deeply hierarchical system that houses a large library
of eLearning content. After you get through the nested "catalogs" (4-5
levels), you get to the Learning Activites, which can contain
*Blended* Learning Activites, which can contain child Learning
Activites.

Naturally, I keep seeing this in my head as a tree.

Directories that IxDA can host (was Re: Role Call: Bay Area Design Agencies)

As IxDA is going through a lot of changes recently, we are building a
Virtual (and physical) Community of Practice.

Chad's question is an interesting one to me. In essence he is creating his
own directory of services relevant to designers. There are other sites that
manage such directories for their members (some public). But I have a few
questions and would like comments and answers:

1. What areas do we need as practitioners of IxD need covered in such a
directory?

2.
