Guillermo,

You asked:
I would like to hear your opinions on diagrams or methods to communicate the steps for ensuring usability in the development process

In the latter half of my presentation "StUX - integrating IA deliverables in a software development methodology" for the IA Summit 2005, I showed several process diagrams with user-centered design elements in them.

To get an idea about the presentation and to download the PDF version of the slides, check out the blog posting about it here: http://www.peterboersma.com/blog /2005 /03 /my -ia -summit -presentation -stux _10.html or on the IA Summit site:

Here is a link to a process diagram created by John Stickley to describe the role of our User Experience team within PeopleSoft. The audience was developers and product strategists and was unveiled at an internal Open House our team held.

Because roles evolve over time, it helps to think of such a diagram as one part a reflection of the current system and one part the next steps in your vision.

Cool, besides, also find JJG's "Elements of User Experience" helps on this problem.

Peter Boesma gave us some pretty amazing examples here:

What do you people think about the use of theses diagrams to introduce usability in the design and develpment process?

Cheers!

Guillermo,

Personally, I think you're probably asking the wrong question.

I'd like to know more about where this question is coming from. What problem are you trying to solve? What have you tried before and what challenges are you trying to overcome?

Using generic notions of usability process to talk about introducing into the design and development process is like saying, "Everyone should eat healthy and get exercise." Beyond over-generalized motherhood-and-apple-pie (apologies for the American-centric idiom) notions that every product should be as usable as possible, it's impossible to talk about any specifics without the context of what you're trying to accomplish.

The result is an "Well, it depends" answer — something I find I hate saying. (We used to sell a t-shirt with this motto, but I pulled it because I felt it was too condescending.)

That's why I think you're struggling finding the resource you're seeking. It doesn't really exist beyond inapplicable generalities.

Jared, I guess you are right. As usual :-)

The problem to solve is to understand the pieces that go into (or that should ideally be taken into account) making usability part of the whole development process at my company, and to arrange them in some way so as to gain insight for a medium and long term strategy.

Pieces could be...

  • Techniques, like user testing, HE and card sorting
  • Resources to support usability (software, hardware, lab)
  • Technology constraints (databases, programming language)
  • Steps in the process, like definition, req gathering, analysis, design, programming, QA, etc
  • Time constraints, like development schedules, time to market...
  • People (roles)
  • Prototyping, fidelity...
  • Disciplines - IA, IxD,
  • And the list goes on...
  • Cheers!
